"Marginal Stability of Disordered Jammed Packings of Spheres"


ABSTRACT


Granular materials are the second most processes materials after water, therefore understanding their mechanical properties is of immense importance. In my talk I will discuss the stability of jammed packings of frictionless spheres; I will derive a relation between the distribution of forces formed between particles in contact, and the gaps between particles which are not in contact. Finally, I will show numerical evidence that jammed packings are, in fact, marginally stable.

BRIEF ACADEMIC/EMPLOYMENT HISTORY

I defended my Ph.D. in 2011 at the Weizmann Institute of Science, Israel. I and am currently a postdoctoral scientist in the Center for Soft Matter Research, New York University.

Suspensions, elastic networks, mechanics of glassy solids.
