"Soft Matter in Construction: Challenges and Expectation"

ABSTRACT

Materials used in construction require robustness and ease of use at the lowest possible cost. The cost reduction is mainly obtained with the optimization of the formulations or the process: sand is replaced with crushed aggregates; reactive products are reduced and replaced with all kinds of waste, human intervention is reduced to the minimum. These adaptations have positive impacts on the environment with a reduction of the total CO2 but also are challenging to keep or even improve rheological and mechanical properties. Several examples demonstrating how soft matter can be used to improve process and cost of materials is presented.
