"Scholarly Publishing: Past, Present and the Shape of Things to Come"

ABSTRACT

The scholarly journal has stood the test of time since the 17th century and continues to serve the needs of the academic community worldwide. The journal system serves a number of important functions particularly registration, certification, dissemination and archiving. It is also closely connected to the academic reward system. The presentation will review how the journal system has evolved to the current position and point to the key drivers (sociological, technological, economic and political / legal) that are shaping future developments.
